Kanaloa

ka•naˈ•lo•a  (proper noun) 1. The Hawaiian god of the sea; the bringer of storms and life.

Our Roots

In Hawaii, surfing is deeply spiritual. Co-founder Tyler’s journey began on the shores of the Big Island. In Hawaii, surfing is a ritual of connecting with the Gods, your ancestors, and the ever-changing ocean. Hawaiians believe that when we pass on, we become part of the sea. Surfing was their way of seeking guidance, balancing life, and honoring the sacredness of nature. At Kanaloa, these traditions shape our approach to surfing and to life.

The Kanaloa Way

Surfing isn’t just about riding waves. It’s about learning to navigate life, much like you navigate the ocean. You cannot control the waves, but you can control which ones you choose to ride. It’s a philosophy that encourages facing the horizon, and letting go of the past. Every lesson at Kanaloa highlights this mindset, helping you take away more than just the ability to stand on a board.

The ocean also teaches us about community. Just like in the surf lineup, we all share the world—taking turns, respecting one another, and embracing the inclusivity that surfing represents. At Kanaloa, we welcome surfers of all levels and backgrounds, sharing not just skills but the joy and spirit of surfing.

When you leave the water, we hope you’ll feel physically exhausted but mentally refreshed– as well as deeply connected to yourself, the ocean, and to the world we all share.
